Manitoba Swine Seminar Liquid Diets for Young Pigs: A “Solution” for Post-Weaning Morbidity and Mortality
نویسندگان
چکیده
Despite concerted research efforts, piglet morbidity and mortality remain as significant problems for the swine industry. This is well illustrated in statistics reported by the most recent National Swine Surveys conducted by the USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS, 1997, 2000). These surveys documented little if any improvement in piglet mortality rates (farrowing and nursery phases) during the past 10 years, which were reported to average about 13% of live births. The predominant causes of mortality following “crushing by the dam” were identified by producers as “starvation” and “diarrhea” (Table 1). Problems persist despite increases in the use of injectable antibiotics by surveyed producers.

Feed Additives and Feeding Strategies to Replace Antibiotics
Piglets are highly susceptible to enteric disorders immediately after weaning. Piglets have then an immature digestive system, whose capacity for nutrient digestion is impaired by the transition from high quality liquid milk to a solid diet. Diarrhea is common post-weaning and is characterised by reduced digestive capacity in young pigs leading to poor growth performance (Pluske et al., 1997). ...
متن کاملFeeding the Pigs’ Immune System and Alternatives to Antibiotics
Diet formulation and feeding strategies may be used to boost the pigs’ immune system and reduce the negative impact of weaning. Post-weaning diarrhea can be reduced or prevented by feeding diets that have low concentrations of crude protein. Such diets may supply fewer amino acids than recommended and pig growth rate may be reduced, but if pigs are provided a diet with a normal or elevated conc...

متن کاملDetermination of fecal shedding rates and genotypes of swine hepatitis E virus (HEV) in Korea.
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection induces an acute hepatitis or a subclinical disease in humans. It is known that HEV is a zoonotic agent and pigs are major reservoirs of HEV. This study was conducted to determine the fecal shedding rates of HEV in various age groups of pigs and identify the genotypes of swine HEV prevailing in Korea. A total of 565 fecal samples were collected from suckling pi...
متن کاملEar necrosis syndrome in weaning pigs associated with PCV2 infection: A case report
Porcine necrotic ear syndrome (PNES) in pigs has been reported as an increasing health problem in many countries with intensive pig farming. The etiology of this disease is complex and the presumed triggering factors can be divided into infectious and non-infectious agents. The present report describes a case of Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2), infection associated with lesions of PNES at the ...
